Thrift Store sells rare Nintendo video game, says “collectors be damned!”
A regional chain of thrift stores is flexing its non-profit muscles this morning after placing a recently donated copy of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic game Anticipation for sale in one of their display cases. Greg Valencia, the manager, had this to say:
“Our thrift store is a staple in this poor neighborhood. We provide gently used products at a reasonable price to our customers. It would be selfish and irresponsible for us to not make this Anticipation game available for purchase.”
Sitting next to some dusty baseball cards and costume jewelry the copy of Anticipation carries a hefty price tag of $65,000. But not everyone is amused. A local game collector had this to say:
“Anticipation is worth maybe $2. These thrift stores give merchandise a second chance, that’s a given, but they also give their employees a second chance as well. Many of these people start working here after years of substance abuse. Whoever priced this game should put down the crack pipe.”
In recent years some Nintendo games have sold on online auction houses for thousands of dollars, but the online consensus seems to be that Anticipation isn’t worth much of anything at all. At the end of the day the Gaming Free Press caught up with Greg the manager as he was getting ready to drive home in his Porsche. When asked about the pricing controversy he had this to say:
“I said it once, and I’ll say it again: our thrift store is a staple in this poor neighborhood. We provide gently used products at a reasonable price to our customers. It would be selfish and irresponsible for us to not make this Anticipation game available for purchase. If $65,000 is too much for the average customer we offer discounts on Wednesday when you make a food donation.”
