After Best Buy customers were trampled to death in Torrance, CA on May 30th, Nintendo responded to criticism about the limited number of stores where qualifying tournaments are taking place. Only eight Best Buys throughout the country are hosting the qualifying events. Top scorers are working for a chance to compete in the Nintendo World Championship 2015 in Los Angeles during E3 video game trade show. It has been twenty-five years since the last Nintendo World Championship.
“The location, was selected based on the field of growth of ethnic major Asian-American. This is in the past 20 years, is done in order to maximize the interest and potential turnout of qualifying events year. We, standing at our discretion , political , despite the social pressure , will continue to qualifying. We are doing this for the fans.”
Data was gathered about the types of consumers each Best Buy received across all locations for the last two years. The in-front loss prevention team and other employees have been manually entering profiles for every shopper making in-store purchases. Information documented included estimated ages, gender, race, and best guess of profession. After careful analyze of this data, Nintendo chose the most promising store locations.
“I think it is absolutely wonderful that we are so in touch with our customer base,” Best Buy Manger Shelia Corld stated about her Tacoma, WA location being chosen as one of the stores to host “The data we have been secretly gathering has allowed us to make accommodations to be more Asian centric. The most recent example is we’ve revamped our parking lot with extra wide parking spaces and removed several obstructions, such as cart corrals. We’ve also expanded our selection of medical terminology software.” There has been a notable decrease in accidents at this location.
