Retro game collectors make out like bandits as World Cup diverts focus on closing auctions.
As the world erupted with excitement over the recent Germany VS Brazil World Cup game, several eBay bidders took advantage of the distraction and sniped rare games at incredible low prices.
A copy of Little Sampson and Bonk’s Adventure for the original Nintendo NES ended at $34.12 and $17.50 respectively within 7 minutes of Germany’s 4th score.
By the time Germany’s earned it’s 6th score a copy of the SEGA Genesis Blockbuster World Video Game Championships cart ended at $103, and a sealed copy of Amazing Tater with a sealed copy of Double Dragon went for $55.
But the amazing deals weren’t exclusive to cartridges, as some buyers scooped up consoles as well. A complete unopened Nintendo Action set went for $38, and an unopened SEGA Master System sold for $12.50 shortly after the conclusion of the game.
The Gaming Free Press reached out to one of the sellers whettpharz420 who listed the unopened NES to get his thoughts on the low bid phenomenon. His reply was pithy: “My buyer can whine to eBay all he wants. I’m not shipping the console.”
Seller fraud happens pretty frequently when games and consoles end at a lower than expected price. Per eBay’s terms of service a seller could risk having their account suspended.
